Maura Healey regulated assault weapons. Then your Republican state Senator tried to stop her.
State Senator Patrick O’Connor, a Republican from Weymouth, is the powerful Minority Whip in the Massachusetts Senate.
Here’s what you need to know about his record on gun violence prevention:
O’CONNOR TRIED TO STRIP ATTORNEY GENERAL MAURA HEALEY’S ABILITY TO PROMPTLY REGULATE ASSAULT WEAPONS
In 2016, Attorney General Maura Healey cracked down on copycat assault weapons, taking those firearms off market
“These deadly assault weapons were designed for military use,” Healey said. “They are meant to kill people in a very short amount of time. They do not belong in civilian hands.”
Your state Senator, Republican Patrick O’Connor, then joined with other Republicans to sponsor a bill that would weaken the Attorney General’s ability to regulate these firearms across the Commonwealth. This came months after his first election, where his “A” rating from the Massachusetts affiliate of the NRA was featured prominently on an online gun site.
O’Connor is now claiming that he is an advocate for gun safety, and points to a lower NRA rating — but the facts are clear, which is why his opponent is endorsed by gun safety advocates like Moms Demand Action and President Barack Obama.
